Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve

Kalakadu Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is a second largest protected area of Tamilnadu, India. This Tiger reserve which is situated in the Western Ghats of Tirunelveli District was created in 1988 by combining Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary and
Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary. Kalakad Mundanthurai comprises of 665 Sq.km. Reserved Forest, about 230 Sq.km of Singampatty Ex-zamindari forest is not yet declared as reserved forest. The dense forest contains tigers, elephants, deer, leopards, sambar, spotted deer, malabar squirrels, nilgiri thar, lion-tailed macaques, and sloth bears. The reserve forms the catchment area for 14 rivers and streams. The Kalakadu Mundanthurai Sanctuary forest department building and the rangers office with some guest house for VIPs and travellers. The tiger cottage is a dormitory style cottage maintained by the forest department. It has a rest room and a few double bed rooms. The route to the cottage is very good with trees on the both sides and there is access to the river from the rear of the building and staying here at night is an adventurous experience.
